May 19 ~ St. Peter Celestine, Pope

Born in 1221, he retired into the desert while still young. His virtues soon drew disciples to him and he founded the Celestines. At the age of 72, he was forced to leave his solitude and assume the responsibilities of the Papacy. Believing himself incapable of filling this high office, he resigned.

Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God, and was found just and in the time of wrath he was made a reconciliation. ~ Epistle: Book of Wisdom.

Esteem not thyself better than others, lest, perhaps, thou be accounted worse in the sight of God, Who knoweth what is in man. ~Imitation: Book I.

Ideal~ St. Peter was a Benedictine, who wished to escape the honors of the world. Nevertheless, he was forced from his solitude and elected Pope.

Today~ If you have noticed, those who desire honors and attention so very much usually end by drawing upon themselves contempt. It is as our Lady sang “The mighty He hath thrust down from their seats and exalted the humble.”

Slogan~ He that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
