One Good Friday, St. John Gualbert, escorted by his army attendants, met alone and unattended the murderer of his brother. He was about to pierce him with his lance when the murderer threw himself at his feet and begged for mercy in the Name of the Crucified. John recalled our Lord’s forgiveness of His enemies and let the murderer go free.

But I say to you, love your enemies, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you: that you may be the children of your Father Who is in heaven. ~Gospel

Christ had enemies and detractors, and wouldst thou have all to be thy friends and benefactors? Whence shall thy patience be crowned, if thou meet with no adversity? Imitation: Book II

Ideal~ Surely it was not an easy matter for St. John Gualbert to forgive when revenge was to be had so easily. Such virtue is not attained without struggle. This victory over himself was rewarded by a vocation to the religious life.

Today~ Perhaps God is waiting for some act of self~denial on your part to give you a great grace. Don’t miss the opportunity by your selfishness and egoism. Be heroic in little things and the big ones will take care of themselves.
