One winter’s day St. Martin met a beggar almost frozen. St. Martin had no money with him, but taking off his warm cloak he cut it in two giving the beggar half of it. That night our Lord appeared to Martin wearing the half cloak.

  That happy man, St. Martin, the bishop of Tours, hath entered into his rest: to welcome him came forth the angels and archangels, the Thrones, the Dominations, and the Virtues. –Gradual of the Feast.

  Many are His visits to the man of interior life, and sweet the conversation that he holdeth with him; plenteous His consolation, His peace, and His familiarity. –Imitation: Book II. 

  Ideal: The giving of half his cloak to a beggar has gone down in history so that everybody knows of it. Knows of it—no more. Do you ever do more than merely think how lovely it is to be charitable till it hurts?

 Today: Christmas is a bit more than a month away. Suppose you begin today to forego some luxuries you might lawfully enjoy and with the money saved buy some clothing or food, or better still, send the money to persons you know are needy. Don’t ever tell anybody you did it. You’ll remember the joy of Christmas of this year for a long time.
